Course Contents
This course focusses on the physical life-cycle of infrastructural systems under train operation, and therefore provides students with physical backgrounds of rail asset management. It is situated at the interface of Structural Dynamics (including time-dependent contact mechanics) and Material Sciences (with special attention for metallurgy and granular materials). The connection is made between the two time-scales of structural response: short-term and long-term, the latter in terms of degradation mechanisms and damage. After following this course, students are able to assess a railway track (- design) with respect to its long-term performance and to make appropriate design and maintenance choices from a technical viewpoint.
Study Goals
Get insight into mechanical and material factors, processes and laws that govern the lifecycle of railway infrastructural assets under train operation;
Get familiar with tools for elementary modelling and forecasting of their physical behaviour;
Be able to design and assess a design of railway assets in view of life cycle performance;
Be able to take technically substantiated decisions in complex design and maintenance situations regarding these assets.
