Expected prior knowledge
Basic calculus, in particular symbolic solution of equations, derivation of relations, differentiation, integration, and vector calculus.

Basic physics, in particular classical mechanics and dynamics.

For those students that have already studied at the TU Delft:

Analysis 1 WB/MT (WI1250wbmt) or similar.
Analysis 2 WB/MT (WI1251wbmt) or similar.

Dynamics 1 WB and MT (WB1116) or similar.
Course Contents
In many technical applications, electricity and magnetism play a role in the transport of forces or signals. This course provides a non-specialistic basis of these subjects, and is primarily intended for minor students from the constructing sciences. Starting with the phenomena, the theory of the electric and magnetic field is derived and, wherever possible, practical applications are given. A number of phenomena is demonstrated through experiments.

Course contents:
Electrostatic field:
Electric charge, Coulomb’s law, electric field, electric torque, Gauss’s law, electric potential, electrostatic energy, capacitance.
Stationary electric current:
Electric current, Ohm’s law, Kirchhoff’s laws.
Magnetostatic field:
Lorentz force, magnetic torque, magnetic field, Biot-Savart law, Ampère’s law, Gauss’s law, magnetostatic energy, inductance.
Electrodynamics and electromagnetics:
Induction, Faraday’s law, Lenz’s law, self induction, mutual induction, displacement current, global Maxwell equations.
Study Goals
- To know the elementary phenomena of classical electrics and magnetics.
- To know the connected theory of these phenomena.
- To know how to correctly relate the phenomena to the theory, and vice versa.
- To be able to explain phenomena using the theory.
- To be able to solve simple problems using the theory.
- To be able to use elementary methods of mathematical physics.

The provided extent and level of the subjects are such that the obtained knowledge forms a non-specialistic basis for the subsequent academic education of an engineer in the constructing sciences.

Tipler, P.A., Physics for scientists and engineers (sixth edition, extended version), W.H. Freeman, New York, 2004 (obtainable from: Elektrotechnische Vereeniging, Leeghwater, etc.).
Written final exam of the entire course matter. It is allowed to use a summary. This summary must be the original version of a handwritten document by the student, and may at most consist of four double-sided A4 sheets.
