Study Goals
The course aims on development by students the system engineering skills needed to design large scale, electrically enabled complex systems. In particular, students will be able:
- to manage and apply concepts and terminology related to the complex system design;
- to manage and apply methods and tools that facilitate systems design and engineering;
- to describe and implement process design guidelines for designing a decision making process in a multi-actor environment;
- to determine the appropriate use of methods for addressing socio-technical design challenges;
- to design and specify systems engineering solutions through the use of requirements analysis and conceptual designs;
- to determine and describe subsystem interfaces, testing and calibration strategy, maintenance and modifications during the life circle;
- to apply methods and tools to enhance creativity in design processes.
Education Method
The course goals will be achieved via studying the theory, problem solving, and concept design. The course includes class sessions, project-based assignment and assignment defense. The class sessions include lectures covering foundations of the system engineering and case studies as well consulting of the assignment. Throughout the course student groups work on a project-based assignment. The course finishes with public defense of the projects.

The course will be based on the following book, which is recommended as background material:
- Sage, A.P. and Armstrong (Jr.), J.E. (2000). Introduction to Systems Engineering. John Wiley & Sons, Inc.
The reader based on this book will be made available to the students.
Reading materials: the concepts and topics discussed in the course will be reinforced by regular reading of papers, articles and book chapters as appropriate. These reading materials will be available on Blackboard.
Assessment
The final grade is determined by the written exam (to check the theoretical basis presented at the lectures) and on evaluation of the final assignment, contribution of an individual student to it and public defence of the assignment.
