Course Contents
This course will explore the ethical issues arising from a variety of technologies used in healthcare. Central to the teaching will be concepts such as autonomy, scientific integrity, privacy, justice, dignity, responsibility, and accountability. In order to explore these concepts we will discuss specific technologies that play a pivotal role in shaping healthcare; robots in healthcare, 3D printing of tissues and organs, portable devices, big data, and artificial intelligence.
Study Goals
At the end of the course students will be able to:
-identify an ethical issue related to healthcare technologies
-identify an ethical theory that may be used to evaluate an ethical issue
-engage in debate to justify one position over another
-engage in personal reflection on their own views re the submit matter
-convey their ethical wisdom verbally and in written form
Education Method
The structure of classes will combine lectures with seminars and debates.
Assessment
Students enrolled in the 3EC course will not have a final exam but students enrolled in the 5EC course will be required to submit a final paper. Attendance in class is mandatory.
