Course Contents
The objective of this course is to prepare its participants for their research projects as first-time researchers. The course focuses on a selection of research approaches and methods that are practical for the participants to learn in order to conduct research within the context of the minor International Entrepreneurship and Development. The course provides a set of lectures, reading assignments, in-class discussions and exercises in combination with group assignments. The participants need to work in groups, each of which shall produce a project plan, a presentation based on the result of the preliminary research and research design of the group project for their upcoming field trip. Three short articles are to be prepared by each group at the beginning, in the middle and at the end of the project to be published on the DCE website.
Study Goals
After successfully completing the course, the participants will be able to:
- Understand the principles of the taught research approaches and methods;
- Reflect on the strengths and limitations of the research methods, and explain their implications;
- Develop a research plan (and select research methods) for the upcoming field research.
Education Method
A mix of lectures, in-class discussions and exercises, and reading assignments. Students (in groups) are to prepare a project plan (about 4000-5000 words) and a presentation of the groundwork for their field trip research. Along the course of the project, students also need to prepare three short articles (about 400-500 words each).
Assessment
The grading for this course will be based on the project plan (45%) and presentation (45%) of the preliminary research and research design, together with the three short articles about the project (10%). All parts must be completed with a passing grade (at least 5.8) in order to pass the course.
